SHOW REVIEW: Amorphis/Swallow the Sun - 4/18/17 - The Orpheum

So, back sometime last fall, it was announced that Amorphis and Swallow the Sun were going to tour North America. One of my favorite bands, that doesn't come to the States often, was going to be stopping in my town. To make things even better, there's a meet 'n greet ticket available. Score!

I bought two tickets as soon as they went on sale, one for myself and one for my brother as a Christmas gift. He was ecstatic when I showed him the tickets back at Christmas. For him this was a childhood dream come true. The last time we saw Amorphis together was back in the 90's supporting their Tales from a Thousand Lakes album. That was a great time to be a metal head, especially in Tampa. I also had the pleasure of seeing Amorphis perform at one of the Tuska Festival after parties back in 2014 with my buddy Jared that went to the festival with me. That was one hell of a trip. Unfortunately, my brother was not in attendance of that show or trip. Definitely plan on heading to Tuska again in the near future.

Anyway, back to the show. There were a couple of local opening bands. Honestly, we missed the first band completely. The second had a great drummer, bassist, and rhythm guitarist, but the lead guitarist and vocalist left much to be desired.

Of the main acts on tour, Swallow the Sun was up first. Having only really discovered this band in the last year or so, I was really excited to see how they stack up live. If memory serves, they opened with Rooms and Shadows. Being a very doom oriented band, the songs are decently long, so even if we were to miss the first, you might not know it as a six song set list could last an hour. Fortunately, we caught the entire set and were moved the entire show.

Finally, the band we came to see, Amorphis. They took the stage and just got right to it from there, opening with Under the Red Cloud. Rolling through their catalog, plenty of sing along moments that the crowd really got into with songs such as Silver Bride, Hopeless Days, and of course, House of Sleep.

These guys have a huge catalog to pull from, and they covered their aural history quite nicely. I think for my brother and I, the icing on the cake was ending the encore, and night, with Black Winter Day. Such a great song, from an incredible album.

All in all, both of these bands are phenomenal live. If you have a chance to see either band, GO! Unfortunately, as I finish writing this, I have been skimming an article stating that Niclas Etelävuori has left the band. So no chances of seeing this lineup again.
